Been there, done that

December 11, 2007

Er….Not Exactly this occasion but it is so true that you need to take many forms of quizzes or exams in Corporate Korea.  I also took a series of quizzes and exams during company’s three-week long orientation program. Following pictures describe a cross section of Korean corporate culture or Korean “exam” culture very well.

Employees of Everland dressed in Santa Claus take an exam prior to “Christmas holiday Fantasy” events.  About 30 employees took part in a one-day course at its Santa Claus school, Yes, Santa Claus school in Everland Yongin Korea,  and will serve customers as Santa Clauses.  So,

1. Take a qualifying examination

2. Get a certification

3. Take the Santa Claus 101 classes

4. Hit the Road, HO HO HO!

I am sure they will be placed every corner of Everland and give their certified “HO HO HO”to every single customers.   Wave and smile!

The story and pictures ripped from here and  here.

Telus Looking to Merge Bell Canada

June 21, 2007

According to news, Telus Corp. and Bell Canada Inc., the target of several privatization bids in the past few months, said they have been discussing a merger that has the potential of creating a combined market capitalization of more than $50 billion.

Vancouver-based Telus plans to make a cash-and-stock bid for its Eastern Canadian counterpart.   Bell Canada has a market cap of about $29.45 billion, while Telus, of Vancouver, British Columbia, has a market cap of about $20.31 billion.

Is this move really going to create “an all-Canadian solution” in a benefit to customer? or it would create a super jumbo giant that monopolizing industry with sky-high wireless phone bill?

While professional Investors have their say on ‘Belus’. I hope there’s wider open door policy for privatization not only to Canadian players but also to others so I, as a customer, could enjoy record low cell phone bill under fierce marketing war between service providers like in the US.

AND more important news for me is that it’s the first day of Summer and it began officially with the solstice at 11:13 A.M.  And this summer is going to be cooler than normal while the rest of Canada should experience hotter summer. Still,  I will try my best to enjoy the 100 days of b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l Summer.

Oh! It’s 1st Anniversary day of my blogging journey with “Hojupjimong: I dream therefore I am“, can’t believe I still filing up my konglish posts, wow!

Congrats to you JiMong!.

Resume blogging

February 6, 2007

Blogging shall be resumed after two weeks of preparation for upcoming 2008 budget planning in the jungle of cubicles.  So many interesting news and gossips been flowed into past thru radio, TV and of course Internet from Vancouver, Korea and around the world.

Where should I resume the paused blog…hmm!  One thing I realized that I was tagged (?) over at Looking @ Reflection  weeks ago.  And she explained that bloggers are writing five things most people wouldn’t know about them, then they turn around and “tag” 5 people and so on.  This is going to be really tough challenge to me.First, I don’t think I have very close five bloggers out of zillion…-,,- ;   may be on cyworld but not on English blogsphere.  Secondly, finding five things to write about me is to be more of challenge. Well with my all respects to looking @ reflection who tagged me, I will try. So the “tag” fun continues.

Here we go,

1. I took “Which Superhero am I?” quiz and found I am Iron Man.

Iron Man
Green Lantern
The Flash
Wonder Woman
Inventor. Businessman. Genius.

2.  I am also a Devil according to Tarot Card

3.I still haven’t found what I am looking for. Yes it’s a U2 song and my favorite.  It took almost twenty years to be one of wild crowds in concert with U2’s 24 fantastical songs.  One of my dreams came true when I could feel that the whole crowds are enjoying U2 fever with shouting, jumping, dancing, weeding, singing and crying at GM Place on April 29th, 2005 on Vertigo Tour.

I cried, sang, jumped and lost my voice for a week after the concert.  Anyhow, I still haven’t found what I am looking for.  Is it in my personal life or in my professional career path or in the relationship that I been connected within my life.  What am I looking for? Would I get an answer if I were practicing meditative daily life? Is it a wealth and prosperity? Is it a honor or good reputation from people? Is it a relationship or love?  I do not know what I am looking for, clearly.  May be I am looking for everyting.

4. JiMong

Why JiMong? JiMong (지몽, 之夢) is Korean spelling of Chinese idiom. Originally from 호접지몽 (胡蝶之夢蝴蝶之夢), HoJupJiMong. HoJup(호접 ,胡蝶) means a butterfly and JiMong(지몽,之夢) means dream of ~.  HoJupJiMong (호접지몽, 胡蝶之夢) is my favorite Chinese idiom took from the Daoist book Zhuangzi (莊子) was named after the famous philosopher in ancient China.  It’s in the Chapter 2 (제물론 齊物論 qí wù lùn – Discussion on Making All things Equal) of the book.

The butterfly dream usually called “Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly” (莊周夢蝶 Zhuāng Zhōu mèng dié).

Once Chuang Chou dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn’t know he was Chuang Chou. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Chuang Chou. But he didn’t know if he was Chuang Chou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Chuang Chou. Between Chuang Chou and a butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things.

然胡蝶也 自喩適志與 不知周也 俄然覺 則

然周也 不知 周之夢爲胡蝶與 胡蝶之夢爲周與

周與胡蝶 則必有分矣 此之謂物化

That’s where I got JiMong (지몽, 之夢).

5. I would some day like to visit Sahara desert, AntarticaAmazon Rainforest, and Tahiti.
