Year 2008

January 10, 2008

Wow, time really does fly.  The first month of 2008 already passed by 1/3.  People saying time really does fly when you’re having fun, busy, or at least when your attention is engaged.  I think, I am already fit into this expression. Busy!

Year 2008 is the year of Rat, yes RAT!!!

<Souvenir stamp set released by Canada Post

Whatever the stereotype on Rat, people with Rat zodiac signs (who had been born in 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960, 1948, 1936, 1924, 1912, 1900…)

They are leaders, pioneers and conquerors. They are charming, passionate, charismatic, practical and hardworking.  They are endowed with great leadership skills and are the most highly organized, meticulous, and systematic of the twelve signs….Rats are said to often have to work very long and hard for everything they many earn or have in life…Traditionally, Rats should avoid Horses, but they can usually find their best friends and love interests in Monkeys, Dragons, and Oxen…..Professions include espionage, psychiatry, psychology, writing, politics, law, engineering, accounting, detective work, acting, and pathology.

Well, I guess that’s good enough on Rats!  Every New Year that rolls around seems to find us trying to start our life a new in many areas.  The New Year’s Resolutions!   I couldn’t find what Korean popular New Year’s are, however here’s what new breed of less self-centred Canadians have,

1. Be more environmentally conscious when shopping.
2. Exercise regularly to improve my physical fitness.
3. Drive less and walk and cycle more.
4. Save money by reducing my spending on non-essentials.
5. Focus on paying down credit card debt.
6. Improve my net worth.
7. Pay more attention to my friends.
8. Eat less red and processed meats and more fish and vegetables.
9. Be more sensitive and caring toward my partner.
10. Focus on helping others.

While Americans Popular New Year’s Resolutions are;

1. Lose Weight
2. Pay off Debt
3. Save Money
4. Get a Better Job
5. Get a Better Education
6. Drink Less Alcohol
7. Reduce Stress Overall
8. Take a Trip
9. Volunteer to Help Others
10. Take a Trip

Yup, most of these list also found on my list of resolutions.  In addition to my traditional list I would like to add one.  Create my own video clip just like our buddy, Bill Gates, one titled “Last Day at Microsoft”

Bill Gates’ Last Day at Microsoft – January 6, 2008 ; part of his keynote speech at CES 2008

Nay…not just yet.  In the end, all the resolutions would be made to help us “travel well on the life path”. How? The Buddha teach us,

“You cannot travel on the path until you become the path itself”

Kudo to Mr. Gates for this sense of humor and his generosity and extensive philanthropy.
